Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) provides a non-intrusive diagnostic method to determine the ion energy distribution function (IEDF) and its perturbations by electromagnetic fields of wave phenomena. Thus, measurements of the IEDF yield the wave’s dispersion relation. This method is demonstrated for an electrostatic ion acoustic wave in the experiment VINETA. The used LIF scheme consists of a diode laser with a center wavelength of 668.61nm, a tuning range of 30pm, and CW operation power of 40mW. Temporal resolution can be achieved by using a digital lock in amplifier, which discriminates the induced fluorescence signal with respect to the phase of the wave. Inversion of the Vlasov equation then yields the wave’s electric field. For the presented experiment TeTi holds and in the low frequency limit (k2 λDe2≪1) the phase velocity of this wave is given by the ion sound velocity.
