Time dependent electron density of a spherical theta pinch — •Christian Teske, Joachim Jacoby, Ying Liu, and Jörg Wiechula — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Frankfurt am Main, Deutschland

Recently a spherical theta pinch, which is a new pulsed discharge device, has been investigated at the Institute of Applied Physics at Frankfurt University. The apparatus can achieve more than 90% fractional ionisation in a discharge plasma. It was also shown that the spherical theta pinch can achieve energy transfer efficiencies of more than 85% which is much higher than with any other theta pinch device. Further investigations on this discharge include the time dependency of the electron density inside the plasma and during the pinching process. A high fraction of VUV-light is also emitted with a high efficiency from the plasma if Argon or Xenon are used as discharge gas.
