The interaction of nowadays routinely generated intense, ultra-short laser pulses with solid targets can create states of matter characterized by very high temperatures and densities close to solid. We present the results of recently finished experiments dealing with the absorption of laser energy in the ultrashort (<30 fs), high intensity (I≈ 5×1019 W/cm2) regime. The influence of different parameters (laser contrast, angle of incidence, surface quality, e.g.) has been studied. It is experimentally proven that the energy transfer is strongly dependent on these quantities.
Combined simulations using hydrodynamic and two dimensional Particle-In-Cell codes have been performed in order to investigate the influence of the plasma scale length to the absorption process and are in good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, an analytical model is proposed to explain the complex interconnections between absorption mechanism, laser and target parameters.
