On the characterization of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) for medical applications — •P Rajasekaran1, N Bibinov1, C Opländer2, D Hoffmeister3, C V Suschek2, D Wandke4, and P Awakowicz11AEPT, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany — 2RWTH Aachen, Germany — 3HAWK, Göttingen, Germany — 4CINOGY GmbH, Duderstadt, Germany

Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma is widely investigated for medical applications. Among several non-thermal plasma sources, DBD devices ignite plasma using human body as the counter electrode. Through proper design using suitable electrical parameters, DBDs are ignited in ambient air which makes the device simple and easy to use. However, the plasma properties should be studied profoundly before it is employed in medical applications. In this talk, the characterization of plasma conditions of a DBD towards medical application will be presented. The studied DBD device comprises of a ceramic-covered electrode driven by a 13 kV pulsed power supply at 300 Hz trigger frequency. Ambient air in the discharge gap is the working gas. The source ignites plasma on objects of high capacitance like the human body and with grounded counter-electrodes. Optical emission spectroscopy, microphotography, current-voltage measurements and numerical simulation are used for plasma characterization. The formation of different discharge modes, the plasma characterization method and the therapeutic value of DBD-produced nitric oxide (NO), ozone and UV photons for skin treatment will be discussed.
