We use four-wave-mixing (FWM) spectroscopy to investigate a single quantum dot (QD) strongly coupled to a microcavity, which we model by the usual Jaynes Cummings (JC) Hamiltonian. The corresponding spectrum is called the JC ladder and consists of doublets of dressed states with a splitting that depends nonlinearly on the number of photons present in the cavity. The inevitable coupling between the QD exciton and the phonons of the surrounding medium is treated using a master equation approach. In our study special emphasis is laid on the behavior of the system, when a large number of photons, up to ∼50, is excited inside the cavity. Reaching large pulse areas, where such an amount of photons drives the dynamics, we observe a quasiperiodic behavior of the cavity polarization which gives rise to characteristic features in the measured FWM signals. We find good agreement between experiment and theory for the entire range of considered pulse areas.
